About the Exhibition
The Art.Write.Now.2019 National Exhibition featured the most creative visual and literary works by teens from across the country. These young artists received top honors in the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, which were adjudicated this year by dozens of notable artists and writers including Elizabeth Acevedo, Marc Brown, Matthew Keiland Parry Davies, Natalie Diaz, Yahdon Isreal, Ilya Kaminsky, Jennifer A. Nielsen, Mark R. Rossero, Jeffrey W. Sweet, and Dr. Lucianne Walkowicz.
The exhibition spanned two locations in New York City—Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons School of Design at The New School and Pratt Institute’s Pratt Manhattan Gallery—and showcased more than 1,000 of the freshest and most engaging visual and literary works from students nationwide in grades 7–12. Art.Write.Now.2019 provided valuable insights into what issues are on the minds of teenagers through painting, poetry, sculpture, photography, journalism, film, animation, editorial cartoons, and more.
The creative teens that were featured in this exhibition follow in the footsteps of past Scholastic Awards recipients Andy Warhol, Charles White, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Ken Burns, Kay WalkingStick, Paul Chan, and many other notable artists and writers.
The Art.Write.Now.2019 National Exhibition and accompanying programs were co-sponsored by the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons School of Design at The New School and Pratt Institute’s Pratt Manhattan Gallery. The exhibition was supported, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Blick Art Materials & Utrecht Art Supplies, and the New York Life Foundation. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers wishes to additionally acknowledge Framerica and RGC Printing, LLC for their special support of this exhibition.
