When is the ribbon cutting ceremony?

Events take place Thursday, November 15, 2018, 8:30 am–1:15 pm. The ceremony is 11:00 am–12:00 pm. Students should arrive by 8:30 am. It will take 10 minutes to get through security.

Where is the ribbon cutting ceremony?

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Department of Education Building, 400 Maryland Avenue S.W., Washington, D.C. (across from the National Air & Space Museum).

How can I RSVP for the event?

All Scholastic Awards recipients, educators, and guests must be registered to attend the event. Go to artandwriting.org/dcrsvp to register the Awards recipient/educator and their guest(s) using the case sensitive password that was included with your invitation.

What is the deadline to RSVP?

All Scholastic Awards recipients, educators, and their guests must register by Thursday, November 8, 2018.

Will Scholastic Awards provide financial assistance with travel and lodging?

No. All Scholastic Awards recipients, educators, and their guests are responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements.

Is there a recommended hotel?

Holiday Inn is conveniently located across the street from the U.S. Department of Education.

Are there other scheduled activities?

Yes! Go to artandwriting.org/dcschedule to view a schedule of the day’s activities which includes an editorial cartoon workshop for students and educators, and a film screening of National Medalist works.

What are the identification requirements for entering the building?

Teens 16 and older and adults are required to show a government (driver’s license, passport, permanent resident card, etc.) or school issued identification card to gain entry. High school students may show their school ID. Youth under 16 years without identification must be accompanied by an adult. Students, educators, and guests will need to show identification at the Department of Education and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Will copies of The Best Teen Writing of 2018 be available at the ceremony?

Yes, you will have the opportunity to grab a copy of The Best Teen Writing while you are in Washington, D.C. Please tell your friends and family they may purchase a copy online as it is available in paperback and e-book on Amazon.com.

Where is my artwork?

Your artwork may be displayed at the U.S. Department of Education or the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Go to artandwriting.org/dclocations to confirm your artwork’s location.

My work is published in The Best Teen Writing of 2018 but I am unable to attend the event. Will a copy be mailed to me?

Yes! In October, copies of The Best Teen Writing of 2018 will be mailed to Awards recipients whose work is featured in the publication.

How can I view my artwork on display at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)?

Artwork on display at IMLS will be available to view 12:30-1:15 pm on November 15, 2018. Only students whose work is on exhibit at IMLS and their educator and guests who have RSVP’d have clearance to view the exhibit. IMLS is a ten-minute walk from the Department of Education.

How can I view my artwork that is part of the Regional Highlight at the Department of Education?

The Regional Highlight features Gold Key works from the Wisconsin Art Region and is on display in the lobby of the US. Department of Education building September 14-October 31, 2018. Please note that these works will not be on display on November 15 during the rescheduled ribbon-cutting ceremony. To schedule a special viewing of these works before October 31, please email info@artandwriting.org.
