Highlights of 2005-2006:
Advocating for the Arts
The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers plays
a unique role in promoting excellence in arts education by showcasing
the work of the nation’s most talented emerging artists and
writers, highlighting the cumulative work of colleague organizations
at the local, state and national levels. The Alliance also takes
an active part in national non-profit organizations whose missions
intersect with that of the Alliance including the Arts Education
Partnership, the National Art Education Association, the National
Council of Teachers of English, and the International Network of
Schools for the Advancement of Arts Education.
Alliance Executive Director B. J. Adler, chaired the Communications
Committee for the Arts Education Partnership, where she is also
a member of the Steering Committee. The AEP Communications Committee
works to create strong messages about the value of arts education
for key constituents and for the general public.
Alliance Associate Director Chuck Wentzel served on the Board of
Directors of the International Network of Schools for the Advancement
of Arts Education.
In October 2005, Alliance staff members Edwin Torres, Chuck Wentzel,
and B.J. Adler attended the Arts Education Partnership Forum in
Charleston, SC. The theme of the forum was Arts Education and The
Creative Economy. Representatives of arts education organizations
from 32 states and the District of Columbia participated and celebrated
the AEP’s 10th anniversary. The Alliance made available original
work by nationally recognized young artists for presentations to
the founders of the Arts Education Partnership including Richard
Deasy, Jane Alexander, Richard Riley and Scott Peterson.
In November 2005, the Alliance presented a panel discussion on
peer review workshops at the NCTE conference in Pittsburg, moderated
by former Associate Director Chuck Wentzel and featuring Scholastic
Writing Awards alumni Lauren Fraley, Hannah Jones, and Bryan Doerries
(currently Senior Manager, National Programs).
