The
Impact of One:
Steps Along the Creative Path
Better Me
The power of the
individual story illuminates the impact of the creative
journey on so many. Here is one inside story.
Marcos
Ortega was recognized with an Art Portfolio Gold Award
and a $10,000 scholarship, presented to only 12 of the 7,000
graduating high school seniors who submitted portfolios.
Marcos told us that his work addresses the profound pain
and loss he has overcome in his young life and is an attempt
to achieve forgiveness: |
“My work is a collection of things I won’t
admit, not even to myself, but provides you with the needed
hints so you can finish the sentence that I don’t
want to say.”
|
Take me to your leader
He channeled his experiences into fascinating works of art.
His dream of continuing to develop his skills at the School
of the Art Institute of Chicago is now possible. Without the
ability to engage in serious study of the arts at Wauwatosa
East High School, under the mentorship of gifted teachers
like Kelly Frederick and Kim Haller, his passion might not
have been channeled in such positive ways.
Marcos’ story reflects the experiences of many students
whose lives have been impacted by having the opportunity
to develop their creative skill. The Alliance for Young
Artists & Writers recognizes these fortunate students
who find their voices and ways to express themselves. These
students are empowered to take charge of their lives, their
futures, and enrich our world while forging their creative
paths.
