Robert Trebor - Alumnus 1969, 1970, 1971

“I've tried to impart some of my experience treading between joy and frustration
in pursuit of both artistic excellence and the rent.”

“The Inside Story”/Artistic and Career Path
Earning prize money from The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards was the first time I had ever been paid for creative endeavor. It also convinced my parents that I could actually earn more money from watching movies and writing about them than from lawn mowing and babysitting.

The first time I had any writing published commercially was in the May 1970 edition of Scholastic’s Literary Cavalcade. It was my award winning review of Easy Rider titled Legend of a Roadmap. My first award in 1969 was a review of the film The Fixer (based on the Pulitzer Prize novel by Bernard Malamud, (also a Scholastic Writing Award winner) directed by the late great John Frankenheimer. Years later I would co-star with Roy Scheider and Ann-Margret in the movie 52-Pickup, directed by none other than John Frankenheimer. It was my first large role in a Hollywood film. Today, folks might know me from my work on the Hercules and Xena TV series, or more recently playing the Russian music master in Raise Your Voice with Hilary Duff, or the Rabbi in Wedding Daze with John Larroquette. This year I will be seen with Martin Short in Jiminy Glick in Lalawood playing a movie critic. And so we come full circle.

Current Status
I earn my income primarily from being an actor not a writer, although my first book, "Dear Salmomeus: The World's First Guide To Love and Money" was published in 2000 to a fair amount of acclaim.

Career Path/Artistic Path
Attended Northwestern University, graduating in 1975

I have also been honored to appear twice as a presenter at the annual Awards Ceremony for The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards at the Kennedy Center in Washington. I've tried to impart some of my experience treading between joy and frustration in pursuit of both artistic excellence and the rent.
