“With such high expectations, you push yourself to go beyond. I never believed I had the ability to go so far.”
The Inside Story
From childhood, I’ve always felt I was artistically inclined. Photography has been a major factor in my life for the past seven years and is my primary method of expressing myself. I have a personal need to create something physical and tangible, as visible and clear as the ideas and inner workings of my mind. Another motivational force behind my work is the need to discover and find out for myself the answer to life’s questions. I intend to share what I find with the photographs I take.
Current Status
I am now a student at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Kathleen has supported the work of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers in many ways over the past year: Kathleen’s work was selected for inclusion in P.S. Art 2005, a Celebration of the Creative Spirit of New York City Public Schools, a program of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers in conjunction with the NYC Department of Education. She was a guest speaker at a Teacher Outreach event at Brooklyn Museum, co-hosted by JPMorgan Chase and the Alliance. Kathleen also recently participated in a panel discussion at the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts moderated by NPR Weekend Performance Today anchor Korva Coleman. Kathleen joined Alliance Executive Director, BJ Adler, and four other creative teens to discuss the impact of artistic involvement on secondary education during the Arts Education Partnership Forum in June 2005, in Washington, DC.
Career Path/Artistic Path
Photography will continually play a role in my life. As I grow, I aim to be a versatile photographer—doing something I like while addressing issues that hit close to the heart. I feel I have been instilled with a sense of duty to my fellow humans. With photography, I can actively address major problems and shed light on them (both figuratively and literally). In doing so, I could promote awareness and possibly solve problems. Ultimately, great social changes could occur.
